Iraqi foreign policy in light of regional shifts after 2017

This study sought to analyze the trajectory of Iraqi foreign policy after 2017 in the context of rapid regional transformations and the emergence of new patterns of competition between the major players in the Middle East. After the state regained its strength following the defeat of ISIS, Iraq found itself facing a complex regional environment characterized by power struggles and growing regional roles, alongside increasing Arab openness towards Baghdad. The study examined the nature of Iraqi foreign policy approaches, which have tended towards adopting a discourse based on balance and positive neutrality, with a view to avoiding involvement in conflicting axes and maximizing national interests by rebuilding balanced relations with regional actors. The abstract also highlights the structural and political challenges facing this approach, particularly the impact of internal divisions, the nature of the political system, and economic and security pressures.
